Biomass
Energy Markets:
The
United States has only about 5% of the world's population but consumes
approximately 25% of global energy supply.
The contribution of biomass energy to U.S. energy consumption in the
late 1970s was over 850,000 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE)/day, or
more than 2% of energy consumption at that time.
By
1990, it had increased to about 1.4 million BOE/day, or 3.3% of total
energy consumption, and is expected to continue to show significant
growth. According to the United Nations, global biomass energy consumption
was about 6.7% (11% Including MSW) of the world's total energy consumption
in 1990.
